What makes an eye exam comprehensive?
Clear vision is only one part of healthy eyes. A comprehensive eye exam looks at the complete system — how accurately your eyes focus, how they move and work as a pair, and the health of every structure from the surface of the cornea to the retina and optic nerve at the very back.
Your exam begins with a conversation — Dr. Yu takes the time to understand your vision, your health history, and how you use your eyes each day. From there, he measures your prescription, assesses your eye coordination and focusing ability, and examines the front of the eye under high magnification. The back of the eye is evaluated with ultra-widefield Optos imaging, giving a detailed view of the retina in a single capture.
The eyes are also the only place in the body where blood vessels and nerve tissue can be viewed directly, without a single incision. That makes a comprehensive exam an important checkpoint not just for conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration, but for signs of systemic disease — including diabetes and high blood pressure — that can first appear in the retina.
Every exam ends the same way: Dr. Yu sits down with you for a clear, plain-language review of what he found, what it means, and what our team recommends next.
